PREAH SIHANOUK, CAMBODIA
Preah Sihanouk is one of the four coastal provinces of Cambodia, located some 226km southwest of the capital city of Phnom Penh. Its coastline, which traverses three political districts, is dotted with splendid beaches and scenic views. Preah Sihanouk is one of the three principal areas designated for tourism development, as its relatively pristine environment indicates great potential for marine and coastal tourism. The province accommodates Cambodia's only deepwater international port, and is strategically important for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, nature conservation and mineral exploration. Local stakeholders, in partnership with national counterparts, seek to develop a proactive management mechanism to effectively address the negative impacts of development projects and multiple-use conflicts.
The second most visited destination is Kampot province, followed by Battambang province, Phnom Penh capital, and the provinces of Kep, Siem Reap, and Pursat, it added.
Of the total 314,081 visitors, 296,042 were national tourists and 18,039 were internal foreign tourists.
In the first quarter of this year, some 2.8 million domestic tourists were registered, among them 2.5 million were national tourists, a year-on-year increase by 42 percent, and about 300,000 were international visitors, up 131 percent.
Cambodia expects to welcome some 600,000 to 700,000 international tourists this year, after the Royal Government had eased the entry rules.
Preah Sihanouk provincial administration is studying underwater tourism – scuba diving tourism – as it is gaining support from national and international tourists.
Coral reefs are gradually becoming a new tourism product for this coastal province, said Deputy Provincial Governor Long Dimanche.
“Scuba diving tourism is interested among tourists, which leads the provincial administration to do more research on areas where tourists can dive to see the corals and how to keep the tourists safe,” he said.
Preah Sihanouk province has the largest coral area of 1,191 hectares, while Kampot province has 953 hectares, Koh Kong province 602 hectares, and Kep province 52 hectares, according to the Ministry of Environment.
Preah Sihanouk provincial administration will increase the coast guard and provide weather information, as well as emergency response team.
Through existing and new tourism products, Mr. Long Dimanche expected that in 2022, Preah Sihanouk province will be able to receive about 1.3 million tourists, of them 250,000 are foreign visitors.
